A second "was" needed?

Hello teachers,

I am not sure which one of these two sentences sounds better? Or are they both awkward?

(1) He was hoping to show some indications that this mad woman was as much as a stranger to him as she to them.

(2) He was hoping to show some indications that this mad woman was as much as a stranger to him as she was to them."

The second sentence has another 'was' added towards the end.

All help is appreciated!
