A second time followed by the third time

Hi. Is this correct to have the phrase "the third time" with the definite article "the" followed by the phrase "a second time" in the following made-up context?

One day, A gave B his bike to fix and B tried fix it but couldn't. The following day, B tried to fix it a second time but couldn't. But the third time B tried it, B was successful and fixed it.

Also, are they the same? It is not related to the above question, but I wonder if the phrases "the third time" and "for the third time" are the same in the following context. Thank you in advance for your help.

1. He tried to solve it the third time.
2. He tried to solve it for the third time.
