Can I say,

(a) Last Sunday, it was a scrabble competition day.

(b) Last Sunday was a scrabble competition.

(c) That day / On that day, John played well in the scrabble competition.

(d) There was a scrabble competition held in Susan's school.

Thanks. But, normally we say, "It was a sunny day", so do we say,

(a) Last Sunday, it was a Scrabble competition day.

If you say 'was a Scrabble competition day' then that would imply that the school often holds Scrabble competition days. If it was a one off or rare occurence, the 'a' can be dropped.

Only you know which applies here, so will know whether or not to include the 'a'. The difference in meaning is slight and both are perfectly acceptable.
