A school's ability can ?

Hello,

Can you use "its" to refer to "school" like this? Of does it refer to "ability" only?

A school's ability can determine its success.

I ask this because the noun is "ability" not school. and so I am wondering if "its" has to refer to the noun of it can refer to "its."

Thank you.
