a request for explanation: zero article

Hello,
why in the below sentence before "position" the zero article was used??
Is this just a phrase?
"Position" is countable...

Therefore, as the nations jockeyed for position around the globe....
... would it be correct to write it:
Therefore, as the nations jockeyed for a position around the globe....
..or not?
