The dove in the painting is a representation of peace.

Is "representation" in the above equal to "symbol," and "dove" to "pigeon?" Thanks.

"...symbol of peace." is okay but don't change "dove" to "pigeon."

The difference lies more in perception than in fact. If you say the word "pigeon" to most people they will envision the feral pigeon that infests modern cities and generally makes a nuisance of itself. What they won't envision is the symbol of peace that a dove represents.
