A reflexive pronoun

1. Could you tell me which one is correct between "He was fortunate in that he had many friends to help [himself/him] when he was stuck in the mire?"

2. If both of 'himself' and 'him' fit the above sentence, what is the difference between them?

3. Can I say, 'in the mud'' instead of 'in the mire'?
