I especially like the last one: a giant sea louse that gets into the mouth of a fish, eats off its tongue and then spends the remainder of its life sitting inside the mouth where the tongue used to be, consuming whatever the fish grabs.

I recently read a fascinating book, The Woman With A Worm In Her Head. The book is a collection of case histories by a doctor who specializes in infectious diseases. One of her patients was a Vietnamese immigrant living in LA, who went back to the old country for a visit. In his honor, his relatives took him to an upscale restaurant, and the piece de resistance was raw snake. It was his special honor to eat the raw heart of the raw snake.

So anyway. Lurking in that heart was a 2-millimeter long worm, which is specially adapated to live inside snakes. The poor *** (the patient, I mean) (though I do have to feel sorry for the worm too) came back to LA with this worm burrowing through his body, looking for suitable snake muscle so it could settle down and raise a family like anybody else. The thing is, human muscle won't do the trick. So the worm keeps burrowing ... and burrowing ... until it finds snake muscle ... burrowing through eyeballs. ... through brains ... through lungs ... through heart ... through testicles ...

THAT POOR WORM!
Here's another, this one first hand:
I came back from 6 months in India and Nepal with a terrible cough. Finally went to a doctor, looking for a cure for what I thought was bronchitis. Fortunately, this doctor had spent time in Asia doing work for Doctors Without Brothels or something, and he recognized what I had. He referred me to a gastroenterologist, and after a bunch of tests and a couple weeks of medicine I finally got rid of what had been a massive infestation of worms (Ascariasis, to be precise) of really horrifying sizes.

So, why the cough? It's called Loeffler's syndrome, and involves a part of the worm's life cycle where they travel into your lungs and up your throat.

Isn't That Nice? This lung-and-throat thing is after they've spent a short period of time in your heart and liver. Ascariasis likes to catch all the sites while making its tour of your body.
Nature is marvelous in its ingenuity. Watching these things come out of your body is an experience not be missed, and I encourage everyone to travel to third world countries, take long camel safaris into the Rajastani desert, and eat what the locals eat (which is to say, chapati, liberally mixed with stool).
