A question to Clive

Hello,

Will there be any difference between these sentences if I use 'it' instead of 'this' or 'this' instead of 'it'?

I noticed that sometimes native speakers say 'the' instead of 'a'. Could you tell me please why?

Here are these sentences:

Is this your sentence?

It`s not a great sentence.

It`s the kind of thing we often say. Isn`t 'a' possible here?

It`s not important to the question.

All these senteces are from your explanations, Clive

  • 'This' suggests the sentence is 'near me' in some way, eg in the post we are talking about.
