A question regarding articles.

Good morning, lads.
Here's a sample sentence:

It's illegal, unless it's for conviction of a crime

Can I add 'a' before 'conviction'?

conviction is countable, so yes, you can add 'a'.

(The sentence as a whole doesn't make a lot of sense, though.)
