A question on prepositions. Ahead of v. Close to

So I am studying for TOEIC rn and this question has given me a headache.


Mr. Johnson was ______ retirement when his boss asked him to be the head of the security at the new facility.


The correct answer is D. close to, and I think B. ahead of could be correct?

No. That's for something else.

Mr. Johnson was ahead of me in line, so he got his coffee before I did.
If you want to see the doctor, you have to make an appointment ahead of time.
