A question on a particular sentence structure (and/or grammar).

Which of these two sentences is better? Or are there any other alternatives you can suggest, please?

Monty is like an omniscient monkey, Peter had told himself; relating, in a non-physical way, to the Japanese macaques that had been in one of his biology classes.

or:

Monty is like an omniscient monkey, Peter had told himself; relating, in a non-physical way, to the Japanese macaques that his biology master had used to describe one of Asia's most unsual omnivores.
