A question about two idoms

Hi, everybody!

i need a helping hand to figure out two idioms I read in an essay written by a native speaker.

1) step back in the ring

2) be beaten to the canvas

Could you please explain what they mean and how to use them? Thanks for help!

1) step back in the ring -- recover and return to the fight. ('Ring' refers to the roped-off area within which boxers battle.)

2) be beaten to the canvas -- be losing very badly in a fight. ('Canvas' is the floor covering of a boxing ring.)


They are both boxing idioms, but you may apply them metaphorically to other sorts of competitive struggles.
