A question about "to fail/failed"

Howdy,

I was thinking about the following sentence the other day and I wasn't sure if it would sound 100% OK to a native speaker:

Although we played well, we failed.

Is it necessary to add to win the game after failed ? or is it OK to leave it as it is and everybody would understand it?

Thanks, best wishes!
