A question about the use of as if

I remember it very well as if it happened yesterday.
I remember it very well as if it had happened yesterday.

As subjunctive mood, which of the above sentences is right?

They are both right, but I would have left out "very well":

"I remember it as if it (had) happened yesterday."

You can also try "as well as if":

"I remember it as well as if it (had) happened yesterday."

My personal preference is to say it with "had".

But why "happened" can be used? Didn't it happen before"remember"? Thanks.

People often leave out the "had". It's not that unusual. Anyway, everybody knows that you can only remember things that have already happened; it's part of the meaning of "remember".

Maybe others will have a better explanation.
