A question about tenses

Should I use the past tense or the present tense to report the results of a survey? For example, should I write

Two thirds of the respondents were women. Their incomes were ...

or

... are women ... incomes are ...?

It seems to me that the past tense is correct, because I'm writing about something in the past, but is the present tense wrong?

Thanks!
