A question about "such"

"He and I are such a suitable pair to share the desolation here."

Is the only reason for the infinitive being there "such"? I mean, is it possible to say "...are a suitable pair to share the desolation"?

And can I say, as a paraphrase of this sentence, "He and I are so alike that we are suited to sharing the desolation here."
