A Question about noun

Hi, as most of you know, there are some nouns end with "tion" as in: option ans tradition; similarly, there are some nouns end with "ssion" as we can see it in: oppression.

Is there any particular rule for that?

I don't think there are rules that always apply, but in this particular case oppre ss ion is the only reasonable option because it comes from the verb to oppre ss , which has the double s. I think in most cases the ending is determined by the etymology of the word. CB
