Grammar

A question about grammar.

Tom's series of encounters with persons from John's former life makes him question the value he places on his memories of John.

I don't understand why the author uses "persons" in this sentence, because the usage of plural of person must be "people".Well, it seems to be a simple question, but I couldn't understand it.

Please explain to me why we need persons in this sentence.

Thanks a lot.

Here the reference is to a small number of specific individuals. Either persons or people is possible.
