A question about DWI or DUI

Should it be added "a" before "DWI" or "DUI" ? For instance, should one say "He got busted for a DWI / DUI." or "He got bust for DWI/DUI." Which one is correct?
Thank you for your help in advance

Either way is possible, I suppose-- as an abbreviation ( He got busted for DUI / driving under the influence ) or as a designation for a citation ( I've given out a DUI to three drivers tonight ). It would be good to find out how a police officer says it.

Just this morning I heard an officer on TV talking about a suspect's "2 previous DUIs," indicating that DUI is a countable noun, making 'a' perfectly correct....at least as far as that officer is concerned. Looks like it's a matter of how it's used: ["he has 2 previous DUIs" ~ "he was convicted of DUI"].
