A question

It's one of the events from the early history of U2.

Bono says: I'd counted in a song and Larry hadn't come in. I counted it in again and he still didn't come in. I looked around; to my psychopathic eyes he looked like he was hiding behind the drum kit. So I picked up the kit to show the audience the drummer hiding behind and chucked it into the crowd. There was a total mess on stage - I think Edge tried to knock me out.

Larry says: He chased me around the drum kit, wanting to kill me with a mike stand. I ran to the dressing-room, running for my life. Edge jumped and got a slap while trying to save me.

--- Now, I think Bono was just counting (in his mind) when Larry should start playing and then he would start singing. But Larry didn't start ... . Is that correct?

--- Also, I'm wondering what he really picked up and chucked into the audience? He couldn't have picked up and throw the whole drum kit because later Larry says that Bono was chasing him around the drum kit. So, I suppose the thing he really picked up and chucked into the audience was a bass drum with everything that is connected to it. What do you think?

  • I would take this to mean that Bono was literally counting.
  • You often hear a member of a band count out loud as a signal to the other members of the band or just as part of the performance.

I would take this to mean that Bono was literally counting. You often hear a member of a band count out loud as a signal to the other members of the band or just as part of the performance.

In all probability this refers to the beginning of the song, in which case it would definitely be an audible, to use an American football term.
Once the drummer begins a "song" he almost never stops. The only mid-song entrance would be if the drummer had a vocal entrance, and that would surely

If you were to guess what he really picked up and chucked into the audience what do you think it would be?

Is it possible to pick up a bass drum? Isn't it too heavy to lift it and throw it? I've never touched a drum kit, so I'm not sure if it's heavy or not

The bass drum is the only thing even a midget drummer could hide behind, and he'd have to be crouching on the floor! The drum is extremely light, but the foot pedal, which would be swinging from it, is not. Actually, I haven't handled a foot p
