A question

Hi everyone. I hope you are all well.

I'm currently reading 'Next Man Up' by John Feinstein. A fine book, but one or two sentences have caused me a bit of confusion.

EG: 'I better warm up now, because I'll feel guilty sitting here once the game starts'

Is there really a need for the comma after now?

Not really, but it makes the sentence read more clearly.

Quite a few grammarians would prefer I'd better warm up...
