A question

I have problems about adverb clauses.I am not be able to understand why my answers are wrong. will anybody help me please.

1__the funds needed for the project were inadequate,it was abondened.(I put BECAUSE OF to the blank but right answer is SINCE)

2__ he was,he went on with his work.(I put THOUGH TIRED to the blank but right answer is TIRED AS)

what is the difference some explanation please....

In the phrase 'because of', of is a preposition. It must be followed by a noun, not a clause.

Though tired he was is not correct English word order.
