A puzzling sentence

President Sadat died in 1981; before that we ( crossed- had crossed) the Suez canal in 1973.

My answer is : crossed

Is my answer correct? My friend says that we must use the past perfect tense after "before that".

Is it necessary to use the past perfect tense after before that? What about the sentence itself? Is it grammatically correct?

Omar Ahmed What about the sentence itself? To me, the sentence feels rather odd whichever you choose. It seems to imply that there is some connection between you crossing the Suez Canal in 1973 and Sadat dying in 1981.
