A puzzling sentence

Find and correct the mistake in the following sentence:

I sold the car which I was bought a year ago.
The answer given by my teacher is : I sold the car which I HAD BOUGHT a year ago.
- What do you think of this answer? Shouldn't it be : I sold the car which I BOUGHT a year ago.
