A puzzling question

He didn’t go out so that he (could do/ did ) his homework.

I think both 'could do' and 'did' are OK. Am I right?

First of all, "so that" is not quite the conjunctive phrase you want to use in this sentence as written..

My suggestion: He didn't go out because he had to do his homework.
