A puzzling question

He asked me if I......a nice time on my previous holiday.

a) had b) had had

I studied that the past simple tense can remain unchanged in reported speech . We can also change it into the past perfect tense. What should a student do if there are two correct answers? Both choices are OK, but I chose 'b'

Most native speakers, especially in conversation, would not repeat the word "had."

Take a guess and be prepared to be told (falsely) that the one you chose is wrong.
