A puzzling question

1- It was only when I (had repaired / repaired) my car that I drove to New York.

2- It was not until I (had repaired / repaired) my car that I drove to New York.

3. Yesterday, I applied for the job. Before that I (had taken/ took) a course in computing

My answer

1. Both 'repaired & had repaired' are OK.

2. Both 'repaired & had repaired' are OK.

3. Both 'took & had taken' are OK.

Is it OK to start the second sentence with 'Before that'?

I think that both the past simple and the past perfect is OK after "it was only when & it was not until'. Am I right?
