A puzzling question

He gets high marks every month. I think he.......the exam.

a) will pass b) is going to pass

My answer is (a) because this prediction is based on my personal opinion. My friend says the correct answer is (b) because this prediction is based on an evidence. Is my friend right?

Both are OK. The idea that only one is correct (if that is what is implied) is probably based on some textbook distinction that does not exist in reality.
