A puzzling question

Find and correct the mistake in the following sentence:

1. Nobody knows where she had put the front door key.

I think that this sentence is error free, but my friend says the sentence should read as follows:

Nobody knew where she had put the front door key.

OR : Nobody knows where she has put the front door key.

Is he right?

Is correct. She "had" (past tense) put the key somewhere some time ago and nobody currently knows (present tense) where.

Nobody knew where she had put the front door key.

"Knew" (past tense) would be correct if the key had since been found, but the person saying it is indicating that for a period of time,

It is, but most native speakers would use the simple past rather than the past perfect.

The verb "put" is irregular. The past form and past participle are the same as the base form.
