a puzzling grammar question

You are right, all are possible. In terms of logic and chronology, I would say "when I....I was thinking... but'


Or, "Before I opened the fridge, I thought ....but..."

When I opened the fridge, I thought it was empty...

This is what you're most likely to hear.

I feel the correct answer is " had thought" as this is what had come to my mind before opening the fridge. However, I still need to have a discussion with the members of this great forum so that one of them can give me a proof as to whether my answer is correct or not
