A propositional unit

1. John thinks Mary diligent.(It is interpreted as "John thinks that Mary is diligent.")

==> In a), we find that 'Mary diligent' is analyzed as a propositional unit meaning 'that Mary is diligent'.

Someone explains about #1 like that(==>).

Would you suggest other ways to explain #1?(I found the underlined part difficult.)
