A profit/profit

I found in my textbook this sentence:

Not all advertising is about selling products and services for a profit.

Is "profit" not an uncountable noun? Why is "a" modifying it here? It really confuses me.

Profit can be used as a countable noun. The Collins Cobuild Dictionary gives this definition: "A profit is an amount of money that you gain when you are paid more for something than it cost you to make, get or do it."

Will the sentence be valid if “a” is omitted?
