Hello,

A portion of knowledge IS (is definitely correct...)

But,

A portion of students WERE/IS?

According to the grammar rules you should write A portion of ... is (not are ) As for the portion of students it sounds odd. I suppose it would be better to write: A group of students ...

  • I suppose it would be better to write: A group of students ...
  • And as for WERE/IS - it is incorrect question as were is Past Tense of to be and it isplural when is is a Present Tense of to be and it is singular.
  • As you cited the phrase out of context it's impossible to tell if it is Present or it is Past so that you should use both choices in the same Tense.
