A play on something

Hey,please take a look at the following context...

A:Hold on a minute,I'll BE BACK[Imitates Arnold Schwarzenegger from Terminator]

B:Umm..Okay???

A:Oh come on!It was obviously a play on the Terminator!Here I was thinking you were a movie buff!

What does "play" in this example mean?I keep hearing this "play on something" every now and then!If I had to guess,I'd say it kind of means "imitate" or something?Thank you for your time.
