It's very difficult without a full sentence, but I'd suggest your first option, "a species of plant."

So what I want to say is that one of the species in the organisms that belong to the to the kingdom Plantae eats frogs.

In a sentence like this, both "species" and "plant" could be used in a non-technical sense, OR in a technical sense.

Hi, vish. I'm not really sure how to answer you. I was needing a break when I answered your post, and I just got back from a very long one.

I have three species of xyz's growing in my back yard.

This answer seems to fly in the face of the original discussion, but I was thinking mainly about the plural of "species."

I guess it would be correct to say "I have three types of rose in my garden," but I know full well that most people would say "I have three types/kinds of roses in my garden."

As I write this, I'm not exactly sure what question you want me to answer.

When there's prior context naming and limiting the plant you wish to talk about, I guess you may refer to its identity/specification as "the plant."

The plant I'm talking about is often called by it's technical name, "XYZ." There are three different species of this plant. (There are three species of the plant.)

Without looking this up on some kind of chart, I'd venture to say it is okay.
