A plain/genuine race

The first nine races are like that: goofy, unusual. The last race is just a plain race. To the big, fast kids, it is the only real race.

I guess so. Presumably the first races were novelty races (three-legged, egg-and-spoon, whatever), but the last race was just a straighforward running race.
