A place to live

Hi,

could anyone help me with this issue?

Which one is correct? Are both correct?

1. They don´t have a place to live.

2. They don´t have a place to live in.

3. They don´t have a house to live

4. They don´t have a house to live in.

I assume number 1 is correct and 2 wrong. But I am doubtful about 3 and 4.

Thank you

Interesting. To me, 1 and 4 sound natural, while 2 and 3 do not (3 is impossible; 2 is not). A place is a point location, while a house is 3-dimensional: I suppose that is the reason.

Hi,

could anyone help me with this issue?

Which one is correct? Are both correct?

1. They don´t have a place to live. OK

2. They don´t have a place to live in. Not wrong, but less usual. Just indicates you are thinking of a building rather than a location. eg If they are primitive people, they might live outside.

3. They don´t have a house to live Wron

Thank you. I completely agree with you!!

But I have a problem.

The student wrote a mix:
They don´t have a place or house to live.

I would consider the last noun (house) and would add IN at the end.

They don´t have a place or house to live IN.

What do you think?

Thank YOU!

Yes: add 'in'. They don´t have a place or house to live IN.

Thank you, once again!

Another version of the same:

They dont have a home to live.

This is not house (the building). Should I add IN or both options are correct?

Thank you.

Only 'in' seems natural to me; we presume it to be an enclosure and not a point location.
