A place of Christian

Today I saw the following sign board in city centre in Leeds:

Oxford Place Centre

A place of Christian worship and service and the home of the Methodist Church in the centre of Leeds.

Why do we need "a" before "place of Christian"? If we use "the", would it be wrong and how would it change the meaning?

Why do we need "a" before "place of Christian"? If we use "the", would it be wrong and how would it change the meaning? It is only one of many places of worship in Leeds.
