A phrease required for a situation

Hi

If during the conversation of two friends one is constantly saying or implying things which could turn the smooth/ peaceful talk into an argument or a fight, what is he doing--I mean any phrase or idiom to describe an act like this?


I talked to him for 30 mintues last night, but the conversation never went smooth. He was constantly ____________________________????
