a phrase for birth

In Hungarian, there is a phrase for birth: to cath sight of daylight/sunlight. E.g. David Smith caught sight of daylight in 1960. It is equivalent to saying he was born in 1960. I would like to know if there is any similar often used phrase in English too.

Top answer

'To see the light of day' (though this is also used of something once hidden). We would not use this in any factual narrative however; it is literary.
