A phrasal verb question

Hello,

I have heard a phrasal verb hold it still in a TV show. there was a guy holding a paper and that phrasal verb was said him by the other guys who was trying to read the paper to mean dont shake it.

And although I am not sure I have heard something like hold still before which was told someone who is wanted to stand still.

If we want someone to stand still shouldn't we say hold yourself still ?

Or can we use it like in both form hold smth still_ and _hold still

No. We omit 'yourself'. Hold still. And the same goes for 'myself', 'himself', etc. He held still.

But if it is not 'yourself', we don't omit it. Hold it still. Hold the paper still.
