I've come across the hearer in a linguistics book. Is that too technical a word, or does it perhaps have a slightly different meaning?

That seems a little different to me. You can hear without listening, if you know what I mean. At least my mother thought so when I was growing up.

I think it's my mistake but I wanted to know the word that means "a person you are speaking with". That person not only listens to you but responds as well. You are having a conversation.

the sentence goes: "the eyes of a [person you are speaking with] can tell much about him to an attentive person". Maybe it sounds awkward, I don't know. I'd like you to rephrase it then.
