A perplexing sentence

Although the police suspected him, he was able to prove that he ........... when the crime was committed.
a) was working b) worked c) had worked d) had been working

I go for 'a', but my friend says the correct answer is 'd' . Is he right?

I'd choose a) was working. "Had been working" has implications of completion of action, but you don't want to have completion in this situation. You want it established that you were working and had not completed working when the crime was taking place.
