What are your thoughts on the example, beyond its peculiarity?

I think it is peculiar because we can say "the elder of the two sisters" and " the older of the two sisters". What do you think?

I think it often does but I wouldn't say it needs to. I find the sentence quite natural, as for BrE, of course.

Either older or oldest would be proper here.

The standard approach for good grammaris not to use the superlative form when you are comparing only two things.

However, some people do not always follow this approach, particularly in casual conversation.
