A payment? The payment?

Hello my fellow friends:

I have a problem with this sentence:

"They wanted me to remind you that you owe them $100. They are waiting for you to make a/the payment".

A payment? The payment? I ask my Engl. teacher which one is correct. She says:
i) Either is valid here, but "the" is slightly better because it's "the payment to pay the $100".
iii) She would prefer "They are waiting for you to pay the debt".

Do you agree, thank you so much?

I disagree with your teacher. If the debtor can pay in installments, use 'make a payment'. If the debt must be paid in one payment, use 'make payment' or just 'pay it'.

Thank you, Mister Micawber. Would "the payment" be wrong, if there is only one (not by installments)?

Yes, it would be non-native in that sentence.
