a part or just part

I sometimes have difficulty in choosing the right one when the choices are rather hard to clearly distinguish like the examples below. My understanding is that you use a part when the part you are referring to is one that has more or less tangible features like a cake and you use part when you are dealing with the ones with intangible or abstract nature.How about these?

That is a part of life.

That is part of life.
