Vocabulary

a part of that ride

They were talking about him being the first black President before he even got elected to the city council, and they all wanted to be a part of that ride.

As old Chinese saying goes:"When a man gets to the top, all his friends and relations get there with him". It seems like being similar to "hang on someone's coattails". I figure that the word 'ride' here has an akin meaning. But I can't find a word conrrespondingly. Is it right? And what word will you use to substitute it?
