A or the?

Which would you choose, "a" or "the" in this case? Or is it better to use the plural form?

It must be really upsetting for dictionary users to be unable to find words they are looking for in a/the dictionary they paid for.

Sorry, just to further clarify ... my answer is assuming that you want to emphasise that they paid for the dictionary and expect to get value for money. In this case, in speech, the word "paid" would be slightly emphasised.

If the context is not like this then the answer might be different.
