A or An

Hi, I was just wondering, is it correct to say "an honours degree" and "an MPhil"? If so, why? I am confused as they both sound correct, but they are consonants...

Thanks in advance!

In both cases, 'an' is correct becouse the words 'honours' and 'mphil' begin with vowel sounds (The 'h' in 'honours' is silent, and the 'm' beginning 'mphil' is read as 'em' -- the name of the letter -- and, so, it, too, begins with a vowel sound.).

Yes, correct.
It's because both phrases start with a vowel sound when you say them aloud.
